Grow Guide - Basil

How To Start: Start your seeds off in pots of moist, multi-purpose compost on a warm but not sunny windowsill. When seedlings are big enough to handle, pot them on into individual pots filled with compost.  

Temperature: Between 18-29℃

Light: Indirect sunlight, at least 6 hours.

If planting indoors, use our Pianta grow light for 12 hours per day.

Watering & Care: Basil will need to be repotted regularly as it grows bushy, prune regularly by picking the leaves and trimming.

Protect from the wind and water sparingly. Basil hates to be sat in water.

Basil is a half-hardy annual, so new plants will be needed each year. However, in autumn, when temperatures start to dip, bring a few plants back indoors to provide a fresh supply of leaves in winter.

Fertiliser: Equal 10-10-10 NPK

Pests: Protect from slugs, snails and whitefly.

Height: Varies with variety. 12-30 inches

Time Of Growth: Between 8-14 days for germination, ready to start harvesting 60-90 days from sowing.

How To Use: For the best flavour, add fresh basil at the end of cooking. It’s said that you should tear rather than chop basil leaves to release their wonderful aroma.

Use in salads, soups, stews, and to make pesto.
